Sentara Heart Annual Report

We are pleased to share the 2015 Sentara Heart Annual Report with you. It truly has been another remarkable year for Sentara Heart, that includes the 12 Sentara hospital cardiac programs serving the residents of Virginia and North Carolina.

During 2015, we celebrated Sentara Heart Hospital’s 15th consecutive ranking as one of the nation’s top 50 cardiac programs as determined by U.S. News & World Report. More than 5,000 hospitals nationwide vie for this distinction every year. Sentara Heart Hospital’s 31st position in 2015 is 13 places higher than the previous year, putting us in the top 1 percent of cardiac care providers in the country. This is a rare feat for a nonacademic hospital. Perhaps even more impressive is that our 28,000-plus team members recommit themselves every year not just to being the best, but to surpassing accomplishments from earlier years.

All Sentara hospitals have a long-standing reputation for clinical excellence and a proven record of exceptional quality outcomes. Ten of our eligible hospitals won Platinum Performance Achievement Awards from the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American College of Cardiology Foundation National Cardiovascular Data Registry for their outstanding treatment of patients with acute myocardial infarctions. Another Sentara hospital, which is new to the program, received silver.

These achievements would not be possible without a unifying governing structure that oversees Sentara Heart’s multiple-site cardiac care program.  It is the leadership of our two regional councils that ensures exceptional quality across a system that encompasses more than 100 care sites.

The councils’ operational report card measures the performance of each Sentara hospital against a single national benchmark. This allows our teams to quickly identify areas of improvement, implement immediate action plans, and to share and standardize best practices across a geographically wide service line.

We invite you to spend time learning more about our nationally recognized, innovative programs and treatments. During 2015 we opened a new Sentara Aortic Disease Center that features a unique multidisciplinary team approach; our Sentara Heart Arrhythmia Center expanded its treatment options to include the groundbreaking five-box thoracoscopic maze and Cox Maze IV procedures; and our Sentara Advanced Heart Failure Center continues to spearhead national and international clinical research studies to improve and enhance the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension and advanced heart failure.

You also can check out some of the other clinical research trials our teams are leading in an effort to improve cardiac care for patients when they are at their most vulnerable.

In the upcoming year and beyond, Sentara Heart will continue the tradition of providing comprehensive and innovative cardiac care to patients regionally, nationally and internationally. Our collaborative team of heart experts remains passionate about uncovering ways to reduce the risk and impact of cardiovascular disease both in our immediate communities and across the globe.
