Sentara CarePlex Hospital

Sentara CarePlex Hospital (SCH), in Hampton, Va., is a technologically advanced, acute care hospital. It is also a Certified Primary Stroke Center through a joint program sponsored by the American Heart Association, the American Stroke Association and The Joint Commission.

The hospital’s comprehensive cardiac program includes diagnostic catheterizations, STEMI (ST-elevation myocardial infarction) care, interventional cardiology, cardiac device implantation, chronic total occlusion procedures, stress testing, nuclear imaging, electrocardiography, echocardiography, intravascular ultrasound, transesophageal echocardiography, and tilt table testing.

The hospital performed more than 1,130 cardiac cath lab procedures in 2015. Of their angioplasty cases, 100 percent take place within 90 minutes of a patient’s arrival at the emergency department. There have been no device site infections at SCH.

The cardiac rehabilitation program at SCH is the only one on the Lower Peninsula that is accredited by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. The 224-bed hospital also has echocardiography accreditation from the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission.

In 2014, the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American College of Cardiology Foundation National Cardiovascular Data Registry awarded CarePlex the Platinum Performance Achievement Award for sustained performance measure score composites of 90 percent or better in the treatment of patients with acute myocardial infarctions for eight consecutive quarters. SCH also received AHA’s Mission: Lifeline Silver Award for outstanding measures to ensure quality care for STEMI and cardiac resuscitation patients.

At SCH, cardiac quality care is in the expert hands of a multidisciplinary team comprised of cardiologists, emergency room doctors and staff, heart catheterization laboratory (cath lab) staff, hospitalists, pharmacy staff, local emergency responders, inpatient nursing, and administration. Each team member is intricately involved in case reviews and process improvements from all aspects of patient care.

SCH is improving local access to cardiac services at Sentara Port Warwick in Newport News by offering services in cardiology, device clinics, and advanced heart failure services along with non-invasive testing that includes ECGs, treadmill stress testing and stress ECGs.

In 2016, SCH plans to expand its cardiac offerings to include the CardioMEMS™ heart failure monitoring system, TAVR screenings, and a wider variety of implanted cardiac devices such as subcutaneous ICDs. The hospital also is updating its low-dose radiation heart cath labs with new, top-of-the-line equipment.
